Understanding the subtle link between Ayurveda, Jyotish (Vedic Astrology), and Vastu requires more than memorizing dosha lists or planetary correspondences. These systems operate on an interconnected elemental logic that explains why the body behaves as it does, how planets influence physiology, and where “Modern Vastu” interpretations misapply foreign models such as the Wu Xing cycle.
This blog organizes the complete framework—elements, planets, doshas, planetary periods, and the misuse of color-based remedies—into a clear and structured flow.
Before You Begin — A Note for New Readers
If you’re new to Vastu or unfamiliar with terms like Modern Vastu and its distortions, or the misuse of Wu Xing, I recommend reading the following article first.
It will give you the necessary foundation and help this blog make complete sense:
The Elemental Foundation (Pancha Bhoota)
Ayurveda begins with the Pancha Bhoota, the five elements that form the three Doshas. Their elemental makeup is as follows:
Doshas and Their Elemental Composition
Vata
- Air (Vayu)
- Space (Akasha)
Pitta
- Fire (Agni)
- Water (Apah)
Kapha
- Earth (Prithvi)
- Water (Apah)
These combinations govern every physiological and psychological function.

Planetary Rulers of the Doshas (Navagraha)
Each Dosha is shaped by the influence of specific Grahas (planets). These are not symbolic correlations—they reflect real physiological tendencies.
Pitta: The Fiery Rulers
Primary Planets
- Sun (Surya)
Heat, vitality, digestion, metabolism—pure Pitta. - Mars (Mangala)
Aggression, transformation, blood heat, metabolic fire.
Key Insight:
These planets drive hyper-metabolism, inflammation, and intense emotional responses.
Vata: The Airy Architects
Primary Planets
- Saturn (Shani)
Dryness, constriction, chronicity, degeneration. - Rahu
Sudden movement, disruption, wind-like disturbances. - Mercury (Budha)
Fast, intelligent, nervous-system focused; can trigger Vata but can be linked to tridosha. - Moon (Chandra) – secondary
Emotional variability and subtle mental movement.
Key Insight:
These planets predispose the body toward instability, dryness, and nervous imbalance.
Kapha: The Watery Builders
Primary Planets
- Jupiter (Guru)
Growth, nourishment, stability, tissue formation. - Venus (Shukra)
Fluids, reproduction, lubrication, sensuality. - Moon (Chandra)
Emotional grounding, coolness, fluid retention.
Key Insight:
These planets govern structure, immunity, and fluid balance.
The Mix of Jyotish and Ayurveda
Jyotish reveals which planetary forces dominate or struggle within a person.
Astrological Diagnosis
A chart shows:
- Planetary strength or affliction
- Dosha tendencies
- Chronic health predispositions
Examples:
- Afflicted Mars → chronic Pitta disorders
- Weak Moon → Kapha depletion + Vata aggravation
- Dominant Saturn → Vata disorders
Planetary Remedies
Gems, colors, mantras, donations and rituals aren’t superstition—they correct elemental imbalances by pacifying or strengthening planetary energies.
Prakriti: A Dynamic, Time-Dependent Reality
A person’s constitution has two layers:
Sthana Prakriti → fixed at birth
Vikriti → shifts continuously based on planets, seasons, lifestyle, stress
Planetary Periods (Mahadasha & Antardasha)
The Vimshottari Dasha dictates which planet rules your life at any point.
- Mahadasha → long-term
- Antardasha → short-term
Since each planet corresponds to a Dosha, the running Dasha directly alters inner balance.
Example:
Someone balanced enters Mars Mahadasha → Pitta rises:
- inflammation
- acidity
- irritability
Even if they were not Pitta-dominant at birth. One may or may not face these due to temporal shifts .
Temporal & Environmental Shifts
Doshas fluctuate with:
- Time of day (Kapha morning, Pitta midday, Vata night)
- Season (summer Pitta, winter Vata, spring Kapha)
- Diet & lifestyle
The Wrong Domain: Forcing Wu Xing onto Static Vastu Space
Modern Vastu frequently borrows from the Chinese Wu Xing cycle and wrongly applies it to the Vastu Purusha Mandala—a fixed devata-based grid. This confusion becomes obvious in color therapy. For example let’s take the Southeast (SE), the Fire zone.
Flawed Modern Vastu Elemental Logic in the Southeast (SE)
To “Increase” Fire
Consultants say:
Add Green/Wood
(based on Wood → Fire)
Flaws:
- Reduces Mercury (green) to a simplistic “wood” classification
- Ignores Mercury’s unpredictable, dualistic behavior
- Imposes a foreign model onto Vastu
To “Reduce” Fire
Consultants say:
Add Yellow/Earth
Flaws:
- Jupiter’s yellow is not equivalent to Earth
- Jupiter expands rather than absorbs
- Misinterprets spiritual sattvic energy as a grounding sponge
The Yellow/Earth Cure:
Reducing Jupiter to an Absorptive Tool
Modern Vastu treats yellow as an Earth element that absorbs Fire.
But Jupiter linked to North-East .
- expands
- elevates sattva
- enhances wisdom and growth
It is not a heat-absorbing Earth tattva.
Does this mean yellow can be used in the North-East? Not as a universal rule. Its application depends on climate and contextual factors. More accurately, blue aligns with the North-East based on elemental placement. Other colors, when used as chara vastu remedies, are situational tools rather than permanent prescriptions.
- Color usage should never be reduced to fixed formulas across geographies.
- Temporary remedies (chara vastu) are context-dependent, not absolute rules.
- The North-East is elementally sensitive; permanent visual or material changes require caution.
- Lighting an “oil/ghee lamp” in this zone for a few hours during puja is acceptable.
- Continuous use of fire or heat elements in the North-East is not traditionally recommended.
- Keeping small water filters in the South-East is generally acceptable when functional necessity demands it.
- However, installing black granite slabs in South-East is not advisable, as it introduces heavy and opposing elemental weight. If done green color tape will not fix it. other multiple remedies needed.
Understanding Exceptions: Prakriti Balancing
Just as in chemistry every rule comes with its exceptions, Vastu Sastra also does not operate on rigid, one-size-fits-all formulas. The principle that “one shoe doesn’t fit all” applies strongly, because each space must be assessed through prakṛti balance, elemental dominance, planetary influences, and functional necessity. What appears contradictory on the surface often becomes logical when these layers are understood together.
- A black slab does not represent the water element; it represents Saturn.
- Even though Saturn is friendly to Venus, using a black slab in the kitchen zone (South-East) is not advisable. It’s an exception based on prakriti balancing logic
- In the West, a kitchen with a black slab is acceptable, as the elemental and planetary logic permits it.
- Mars (fire) does not yield adverse results in Saturn’s zone; hence a kitchen in the West is acceptable but understanding balance.
- The North-West is also influenced by the Moon; Mars and Saturn remain neutral to the Moon in its own domain.
- Therefore, a black slab or fire can be used in a North-West kitchen considering balance.
Vastu Sastra is ultimately a science of balancing multiple variables simultaneously, not the blind application of isolated rules. one who is not expert in analyzing along with energy sensitivity should exercise caution.
Misunderstanding Venus–Jupiter Enmity
The SE zone is deeply connected with Venus even though fire represents Mars.
- Jupiter and Venus are enemies
- But it’s not a symmetrical or destructive enmity
- Jupiter in a Venus domain can still produce comfort and abundance
Thus the claim “yellow reduces SE Fire” is not universally true.
The Crystal Calamity: Ignoring Actual Energetic Properties
Crystals cannot be prescribed based on color alone. They must be understood through:
- mineral structure
- energetic vibration
- light behavior
- traditional usage
The Citrine Exception That Exposes the Flawed Logic
Citrine is often labeled a Jupiter stone simply because it is yellow.
But its true nature comes from its vibration—not its color.
Traditional Vastu consultants (not modern ones) regularly place Citrine in the Southeast, and it works extremely well.
The key point:
- Citrine does not reduce Fire
- Citrine does not cause negative effects in SE
- Citrine often enhances the zone based on balancing theory
- Its effect is vibrational prakriti balancing based, not color-based.
- Even Green Aventurine, Red Carnelian are used in SE based on prakriti balancing theory.
- Not Modern Vastu imported logic of elemental enhancement or reduction based on Color alone.
If yellow always reduced fire, Citrine would be harmful.
But it isn’t—because Vastu is not based on the Fire → Earth logic of Wu Xing. Wu Xing works entirely on a different framework which we have discussed in another article.
Yellow Aventurine
Yellow Aventurine is generally linked to the Sun (Surya) because of its bright golden hue, but this association comes with a critical caution that many people overlook. The Southeast (SE) direction is strongly connected to Venus (Shukra), and in classical Jyotisha, Sun and Venus are natural enemies. Their energies clash—not circumstantially, but fundamentally.
Because of this planetary enmity, classical Vastu consultants do not place Yellow Aventurine in the Southeast.
This stands in contrast to Citrine, which many traditional practitioners do use in SE because its vibrational signature aligns harmoniously with the zone. Yellow Aventurine, however, is a firm “do not place in SE” stone within classical logic.
And this contrast reflects a deeper truth:
Color-based remedies are conditional — one rule does not fit all.
This is exactly why people should not implement Instagram or YouTube Vastu tips. Vastu, especially when gemstones and devata-zones are involved, is a highly specialized domain that demands deep understanding of the consultant. A remedy heard online and applied without context, diagnosis, or vibrational assessment often fails to give the desired result.
Many remedies also work best in conjunction, in a clubbed or layered manner, depending on the specific zonal imbalance. Vastu corrections are not plug-and-play; they are relational, situational, and highly nuanced.
Many people, even after consulting practitioners, do not experience proper long-term results in all aspects of life. You now know why—because the limitations of certain consultants come into the picture. It is not a flaw of Vāstu Śāstra itself, but of its incomplete or improper understanding and application.
- Vastu Sastra is a complete and integrated science in itself.
- Effective application requires basic knowledge of Prakriti and Astrology.
- Each recommendation carries long-term physical, psychological, and energetic consequences.
- Short-term certification courses are insufficient for mastering such a profound system.
- Treating Vastu merely as a business opportunity undermines both the science and the client’s well-being.
The Responsibility
The responsibility is comparable to modern medicine, where years of study and in house practice with close people comes before independent consultation. In the same way, Vastu Sastra requires depth and maturity, as its applications can have lasting effects on people’s lives and well-being.
“Oh, you have a needle or nail in this zone, so it’s causing problems.” Such fear-based tactics and superstition should not be promoted for selfish agendas or as a display of false authority. A consultant’s role is to bring clarity, balance, and responsibility—not anxiety. Without self-discipline, sadhana, and inner growth, a practitioner remains merely a conman rather than becoming a true guide.
I request readers to forgive my strong stance. It does not arise from personal attack, but from concern over the distortion of a genuine aspect of Śilpa Sastra, which is a part of the Vedic tradition. I believe I have the right—and responsibility—to speak in its defense.
Caution, Not a Marketing Strategy
To be clear — this is not some “oh, so I should consult you” marketing trick.
Whether someone chooses to take professional consultation from me is secondary.
Awareness comes first.
Removing distorted theories comes first.
Understanding the actual logic comes first.
Only when the foundation is clear can the system be used as it was meant to be: precisely, respectfully, and effectively.
When Plastic Tape Becomes More “Spiritual” Than Crystals
Modern Vastu consultants proudly declare that “Crystals cannot be used as remedies apart from South-West because they represent the Earth element.”
Fantastic — except that logic makes absolutely no sense.
Crystals are Earth minerals… yes.
But so are metals.
And metals don’t exactly fall from the sky when we order them on Amazon.
If Earth-element objects are banned, then:
- your steel utensils should be illegal
- your gold ring should be removed
- and your entire wooden furniture set should be escorted out by security
Because guess what?
Wood grows on Earth.
It doesn’t hover mid-air whispering “I represent Vayu.”
(And the full explanation of why “wood = air” is a total myth is already covered in the linked article.)
Yet, somehow, in Modern Vastu logic:
Crystals = too earthy
Plastic tape = spiritually enlightened
I mean… really?
A piece of plastic tape — made from petroleum sludge — is considered a more “pure directional remedy” than a naturally formed crystal with millions of years of vibrational geometry.
That’s not a remedy.
That’s a placebo sticker.
Crystals, when understood through their vibration, mineral structure, devata-alignment, and energetic pattern, work perfectly well in classical Vastu.
Color stones are valid.
Natural materials are valid.
What’s not valid is pretending that plastic has more elemental intelligence than quartz.
Color Bulbs, Wall Paints & the Great “One-Color-Fits-All” Myth
Now let’s talk about the legendary Color Remedies of Modern Vastu.
Modern Vastu boldly declares:
“Use a red bulb in the South-East.”
Can it be used?
Yes, surely—but only under specific conditions.
Otherwise, it can increase aggression among other things.
Personally, I haven’t dared to experiment with this, because my guru has very clearly said NO—even red color in the Southeast is not to be taken lightly.
Can you use light green wall paint in the East?
Absolutely—even though the main zonal color of the East is saffron (Surya).
“Wait… green? In the East? Isn’t green the Air element?”
You wish!
If green represents Air, then by that logic:
- North-West is the Air zone,
- So green should work there too—And it actually does, irrespective of what Modern Vastu says.
- So why isn’t that part of the standard Modern Vastu color chart? Because it’s flawed .
But try using a green bulb in East–North-East for more than 3 days.
Someone with elevated blood pressure—under certain conditions—will feel the effect very quickly.
So why does green harmonize with East but agitate East–North-East?
Because Vāstu is not a preschool color chart.
It is governed by 45 devatās, each with:
- planetary prakriti mapping
- prakriti–chakra mapping
- specific roles within the Vāstu Purusha Mandala
For example:
- East–North-East connects to Hrit Padma ( Magneta) and Ajna Chakra ( Indigo)
- East corresponds to Anahata Chakra (Green)
So applying color isn’t “painting a zone.”
It’s interacting with psycho-spatial archetypes and chakra-linked fields.
This is why color remedies are highly sophisticated,
and why the simplistic Modern Vastu “zone = color = done” formula is not just flawed—
it’s logic-based wallpaper astrology.
Color in temporary color-bulb therapy represents planets, not elements.
This is why bulb usage depends on:
- the individual’s current prakriti,
- the running planetary period,
- the time of day,
- and even the wattage and duration of exposure.
On the other hand, normal wall painting follows Vedic Vāstu elemental colors—
NOT Modern Vastu’s oversimplified zone-color lists.
Yes, there are superficial similarities at times, but Modern Vastu’s system carries multiple distortions,
And if someone is well-versed in the chakra system, then chakra mapping can be used in conjunction with planetary mapping—never in isolation.
Planetary → Prakriti → Chakra mapping is a tri-layered system, not a single-color sticker chart.
This is why true bulb color therapy is a sophisticated method, not a “pick your favorite color and light it up ” exercise.
A Clarification on Chakra System
It is also important to clarify that the chakra system is not mentioned anywhere in the classical Vastu texts.
Its application to spatial zones is a modern interpretative layer, not an original component of Vastu Sastra.
A knowledgeable classical Vastu consultant can work with complete accuracy without using the chakra framework at all.
So if someone finds chakra-based mapping confusing or unnecessary, they can safely ignore it—
nothing in classical Vastu collapses without it.
However, for those who understand both systems deeply, the chakra model can be used in conjunction with planetary and prakriti mapping—not as a standalone shortcut, and definitely not as a replacement for classical logic.
